With the world needing to cut carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, the transition to renewable energy sources is more critical than ever. Already, the world is feeling the impact of climate change, such as longer and hotter heatwaves.

Engaging in these projects is invaluable for students, particularly those in engineering, who want to understand and contribute to this transition. The renewable energy sector is projected to generate nearly 30 million jobs by 2030, highlighting the growing demand for skilled professionals.

These hands-on experiences foster a deeper understanding of energy concepts and equip students with practical skills essential for future careers in the renewable energy sector.

Renewable Energy Sources, Education and the Energy Transition

Education plays a pivotal role in the global shift towards renewable energy. According to IRENA, the renewable energy sector employed over 13.7 million people globally in 2022, a number that continues to grow as the demand for clean energy rises. As a result, integrating renewable energy projects into a curriculum is essential, as it bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.

Practical projects allow students to experiment with and understand the complexities of renewable energy, from design and implementation to optimisation. These experiences prepare students for careers in a rapidly evolving energy sector where innovation and problem-solving are key.

Renewable Energy Projects for Engineering Students

Engineering students have a unique opportunity to contribute to the renewable energy sector through hands-on projects. Below are some categories of renewable energy projects that students can undertake.

Solar Energy Projects

Solar energy is the most accessible and widely used renewable energy source. As of 2023, solar power accounted for 5.5% of global electricity generation, a figure expected to rise significantly in the coming decades. The use of solar panels for power generation is becoming very common. Given its growing importance, a variety of solar energy projects have been developed for classrooms, allowing students to engage with all aspects of solar energy systems.

A foundational project might involve designing and building a solar-powered water heater, requiring a basic understanding of photovoltaic systems, thermodynamics and energy efficiency.

For more advanced projects, students can focus on specific challenges in solar energy, such as developing solar tracking systems, solar energy measurement system or creating solar battery charger and small-scale solar farm models. These renewable energy projects for students allow them to explore solar, the link between computer programming and solar, grid integration and the economic factors associated with renewable energy.

Wind Energy Projects

Wind energy is another crucial area within the renewable energy sector. It accounted for approximately 7.8% of global electricity generation in 2023. For students, wind energy projects offer an excellent opportunity to delve into the mechanics and aerodynamics of harnessing wind power.

Building a mini hydroelectric generator requires an understanding of fluid dynamics, turbine mechanics and electrical systems. Alternatively, designing a micro-hydro system tailored for rural or off-grid areas provides sustainable energy solutions for communities with limited access to electricity.

Storage and Transmission Projects For Students

Energy storage and transmission are critical components of any renewable energy system, ensuring that the energy generated is effectively stored and delivered. Renewables are often intermittent, creating unique design challenges. Bridging this gap is a critical step in decarbonisation.

One project idea is designing a battery storage system for renewable energy, which involves understanding battery chemistry, charge cycles and energy management. Students can also develop models for smart grid technology, which optimises electricity distribution from renewable sources and improves grid stability. Another project might involve creating an efficient energy transmission system, focusing on reducing energy losses during transmission and enhancing overall grid efficiency.

As global grid-scale battery storage capacity is expected to increase dramatically – from 28 GW in 2022 to nearly 70 GW by 2030 – these projects will help students grasp the challenges and opportunities in this crucial area.
